It’s Been Too Long

I’m feeling guilty about not updating lately. I shouldn’t–I do this mostly for myself and I really doubt anyone is out there wondering why I haven’t posted lately.

Since my last post:

I attended an “office” party hosted by a couple of environmental groups. Great food and wine, very interesting conversation.

Took a one week vacation and promptly came down with some sort of stomach bug that completely knocked me out.

Attempted to make cookies with my grandmother. The ulterior motive was to learn her secrets, but the first two batches didn’t turn out and I was sent to another kitchen with a bucket of ready made dough and a couple of cookie sheets. (She actually did get all of her baking done before Christmas–all I had to do was help frost the sugar cookies)

Took the above grandmother to a Nutcracker Tea at the local tea house.

Saw The Return of the King. Having to sit in the front row may have prompted the above stomach ailment, but doesn’t explain it all.

Celebrated Christmas Eve at my mother’s. She was determined that we would all go to church with her. This caused the family time which I was so looking forward to to be dominated by my brother insisting that he wasn’t going and my mother telling him that yes, he was. It also created a flurry of gift unwrapping right before we all had to leave–I didn’t get to see everything that the little kids got–and they are so much fun to watch. On a positive note, I got the chocolate candy set that I wanted!

Celebrated Christmas Day at my grandmother’s and with g00fy_blonde‘s family. Also made a quick run across the street to my fathers so that I could exchange gifts with siblings. Good thing we didn’t exchange on Christmas Eve like we usually do–we were able to enjoy each other’s company.

Picked up two new card games, mystery rummy and Clue–and learned to play both.

Realized that not all the snowflakes were going to get finished and just got on with life.

Mailed out most of my holiday cards. However, the remainder seem to have gone AWOL. How embarrassing.

Attended a big family gathering of g00fy_blonde‘s family. Had to watch the horror that was Sunday football with a bunch of Packer fans. To make matters worse, g00fy_blonde had just given me a Vikings t-shirt that was very anti-Packer.

Realized that I really need to get my own place very soon. Unfortunately, I will be delaying a bit because I’m about to start house-sitting in Minneapolis again and may be doing so off and on for the next 3-4 months. Good time to set aside money for deposits and household item replacements. I’m not even sure if I have any pots and I know I don’t have a wastebasket. It should be fun unpacking to see what I do have.

Came back to work and have been basically bumming around, kind of keeping myself busy.

Somehow last night, in large part due to g00fy_blonde, I managed to make the sausage and cheese puffs for tonight’s book club holiday party. I also managed to get my holiday letter written and printed out (it’s pretty lame this year). I also got back on track with the crocheted projects.

Tonight, I need to finish the rum balls for the office, continue with the “assembly line” of projects and have a great time at book club. We’re reading John Grisham’s “Skipping Christmas”, which was my selection. Hopefully, it will go over than Vanity Fair did.

Mission Unaccomplished

I have been doing pretty good not getting too panicked that the holidays are closing in. In order to maintain my sanity, I had a list of things that really should have been taken care of this weekend, but for one reason or another, didn’t.

For example, crocheted projects needed to be shaped, starched and assembled. One was assembled, one got starched but I didn’t have time to shape (pin the project on styrofoam)the next. Since this is kind of an assembly line, things are a little backed up. To make up for this, I will have to spend about an hour at my father’s every night this week working on these finishing stages. (Unaccomplished)

My sister has just bought her second house (this time with the love of her life)and is becoming domesticated. She claims that she has no kitchen stuff and has requested the basics plus recipes. I thought this would be easy because I have cooking software that allows me to print recipes out. In the past, I have created “cookbooks” by printing pages and putting them in sheet protectors collected in a three ring binder. Very easy. But, she wants recipe cards. I love my sister, but I am not going to sit down and rewrite the best recipes of my mother and grandmothers. However, the software will print recipe cards using Avery postcards. Cool and I can personalize them too! (Partial accomplishment)

Holiday letters did not go out this weekend as expected. There was a little problem finding computer paper that I could live with. For some reason, I am being pickier than normal this year. It took two stops to find the cards (and I’m not terribly excited about them)two weeks ago. Also, since the PDA crash, I am missing some family addresses. I’ve got a draft of the letter written and expect to have them ready to go tonight. (Partial accomplishment)

Holiday baking didn’t get done. I thought I saw a recipe posted for rum balls somewhere but when I went to find it, I wound up wasting my time. I eventually found a different one (the original called for dark rum and all the ones I could find after purchasing dark rum called for light), and tried to make do. I mixed it up, but ran out of time to finish. I managed to buy the ingredients for the cheddar and sausage puffs, but didn’t get any further. (Unaccomplished)

So, what did get done?

I managed to finally purchase 2 new tires for my car. The other two need to be replaced soon, but for now I’ve got what I have to have. However, the dealership broke a stud and messed up two lug nuts. Of course, their preferred shop was closed, but I’ll try to call them today to find out if I can even get the car in to them. If not, g00fy_blonde will have to stop by the dealership on his way from work some night and make the repair for me.

I purchased and dropped off the gift for the Christmas tree at church. I have 4 more people crossed off my Christmas list. And I made my mother happy by spending time reconfiguring her home network and showing her and her husband how to download and install desktop themes and backgrounds.

Oh! and I got a lovely Holiday card from sabbysteg. You will get yours soon, but it won’t be as nice. By the way, check out her Cats I Have Known, if she still has it. It was a very fun zine to read–at least if you are a cat lover. It guilted me into spending a little more time with The Pooka.

It’s Friday!

1. Do you enjoy the cold weather and snow for the holidays?

I like snow for the holidays. I hate cold weather. I like it cool enough that a cup of cider, cocoa or hot alcoholic beverage warms me up, but I hate getting chilled.

2. What is your ideal holiday celebration? How, where, with whom would you celebrate to make things perfect?

The traditional Christmas Eve that we celebrated when I was a child with my grandparents and second cousins. I liked having it at my grandmother’s house. Dinner was the traditional sauerkraut and spareribs, presents were opened after all the dishes were clean. It was a lot of fun.

3. Do you do have any holiday traditions?

My family has kept the sauerkraut & spareribs. When I’m not with my family, I invite people over on Christmas Eve for hors d’ouevres (boiled shrimp and crab, meat & cheese tray, fondue, christmas cookies)

4. Do you do anything to help the needy? I usually buy a gift for a needy child through church or a local organization.

5. What one gift would you like for yourself? I suppose I should say something deep and profound here, but I feel rather giddy so….there is a chocolate candy making kit that I have had my eye on for awhile.

g00fy_blonde is in Tomah, Wisconsin on a business trip. He’ll be back on Friday, but in the meantime, I’ve been staying at my Dad’s. I was so excited about it last night. There is a tv in my bedroom, so I can lay in bed and watch old movies. Unfortunately, there wasn’t much in the way of old movies on last night. The Pooka was very attentive to me. She crawled into my lap every chance she could just to snuggle. I love the way she gazes up at me as if I am her whole world. Unfortunately, it also leads to guilt because I am so seldom there. I really need to get my own place and will be focusing on that at the beginning of next year.

The Pooka also slept curled up next to me last night. I was a little concerned because I haven’t clipped her in awhile and her claws can easily get through my jeans. Of course, I couln’t find the clippers last night–hence the name Pooka. Everything worked out, she didn’t try to get my attention at any time during the night. My only problem was that my air cleaner needs a new filter and her dander made me rather stuffy this morning.

False Alarm

My new Clie just started making an awful sound. I removed the memory stick, but it still kept humming. It wouldn’t turn on and so I hit the reset button. The Clie began started back up just like I had done a hard reset (and erased all memory!). Even my customized settings were gone. So, yeah I freaked out.

When I got to my computer and could hot sync, it reinstalled all of the information and programs I currently had on my PDA. Of course I had to set up BalanceLog again (an awesome food/exercise journal)but it imported all of my information from the pc, so I think I’m okay now. Whew!
