In spite of not wanting to get out of bed this morning, I’m having a very good day. I don’t know why I’m having a good day–it’s just like when I can’t explain why I’m having an awful day. It just is.

I’m not very focused today. It’s nice and warm outside and I want to play. I don’t want to sort through the convoluted mess that is the Duck Rally’s financials. I don’t want to fill out complicated insurance applications. I don’t even really want to create a job description for the person who will take a bunch of my busy work away.

I want to go for a walk. I want to go for a bike ride. I want to sit on the front step and read a book and drink a glass of wine. (If you knew my neighborhood, you would laugh at that image–there’s more meth addicts than wine drinkers)

I am looking forward to the District Meeting tonight. The theme is Girls Night Out–and my friend, the Patchwork Princess, has created a mouth-watering menu.

Feeling Good

Our annual audit is primarily over. The auditors were only in the office for a day and a half and now the rest will be answering emails and phone calls–and preparing the forms for the 990. Just think, we may not have to file for an extension this year!

This has been the fastest ever! I almost didn’t need chocolate. Okay, so I really didn’t NEED it, but I can’t go through an audit without a bag of m&m’s*! Just imagine the consequences. I did notice as I ate my little m&m packet yesterday that I no longer like m&m’s. They were too sweet and just kind of ewwww. That’s too bad because the machine jammed yesterday and I had to buy a second one to get the first package out. So, of course, I have to eat the second package today. We can’t let any chocolate go to waste!

Other things that I’ve found to be too sweet lately include any kind of soda and cake. I couldn’t even make 10 bites of a chocolate chip cookie dough blizzard! Thank goodness I can still eat Ben & Jerry’s Half Baked ice cream! What’s wrong with me????

I would normally post this on my other blog but I’m so annoyed with Sears right now I feel I just have to share with the world at large (okay the 5 or 6 of you who skim my journal). My fiance and I decided to register at Sears because Target doesn’t have tools. We went to the Sears at the Mall of America and opened our registry on Saturday. They had virtually no towels or bedding. We found some towels we liked but they all scanned in as “Chewbacca”. I don’t know what the wookie from Star Wars has to do with my bathroom–but there was no other delineation. So, if you were to look up the Sears registry, you would see that we wanted 2Chewbacca 9 times. Since the registry says bed and bath, I had visions of receiving a Star Wars comforter set. We couldn’t even scan the only picture frames we liked because they were clearance items.

So we came home and went online. First things first, we removed all the Chewbacca stuff. Next we tried to find towels and sheets that we liked. There was no selection. Anything that I thought I could tolerate was marked as “clearance”. So it looks like we’ll be adding Target to our list of registries.

*I’m talking about the small one serving packages–not the 1 pound bag. Eating all that at one sitting would make anyone sick.

Wow! We got a lot done over the weekend. I treated myself to a mani/pedicure–and for the pedicure part, I sat in a wonderful massage chair. So nice…..

My fiance’s cousin held a Tupperware party, so I thought I should go since it’s the first time anyone on that side of the family has specifically invited me to something. Also, she had told me that they are no longer taking foster kids because they’ve had so many problems–the latest being accusations of sexual misconduct by her husband! The county investigated them for two months and found the allegations were baseless. She still has her daycare open. However, certain family members have decided to alienate them and there are all kinds of rumors flying around. We’ve heard that there are four different cases pending, the state has begun an investigation, and that there is a court order prohibiting the husband from being on their property while the daycare is in session. We’re really not sure what the truth is, and we don’t have children, so we believe our best course is to act like nothing is happening. I believe that if there is anything to these accusations, that the state will take appropriate measures. In the meantime, we don’t want to judge. We don’t normally have much contact with them anyway.

Saturday night was my sister’s Minnesota wedding reception. It was a blast! I saw so many people that I hadn’t seen in a very long time. It was nice catching up and a good precursor to my own wedding reception. I’m such a dork that I was surprised that I knew the majority of people in the room! I mean, she is my sister and we did grow up together!

Today is going fairly well. One small glitch at work is that Clean Water Action has sent a memo to all their “friends” in the Minnesota House urging them NOT to support the bill that would provide dedicated funding for cleaning up the lakes and rivers.* Yes, there are some big problems with the bill, but CWA’s position is don’t bother to fix it, just drop it. Since they are part of several coalitions that have been working towards getting this bill passed, it’s a bit of a bombshell. The most frequent question of the day has been, “What’s their name again?”

*Yes, there is more to the story, but it’s long and convoluted. You’re getting the top line analysis.

Our awards dinner went well last night. I’m not really the schmoozing type, but a glass of white wine helps. People seemed to feel good about the event and we may have interesed some new major donors, so it was successful.

Today I’m preparing for the audit that begins on Monday. I really haven’t had a chance until today to get the preliminary work done and I have only this afternoon to accomplish what usually takes me a good two days of solid focus.

I was so exhausted last night that my entire body ached when I tried to get up this morning. I lounged around for an extra half hour and came into work 15 minutes late. I also grabbed a latte on the way in. I think those two decisions have saved me today. I’m focused and I’m happy to be here. And I didn’t fall asleep behind the wheel on the way in. Unfortunately, my preferred coffeehouse, Blue Moon, is closed for some remodeling and so I had to stop at Lily’s. Lily’s is okay, but never my first choice for coffee/cocoa. I tried the special, a berry latte, and I didn’t care for it. Oh well, it woke me up and that’s what I was really going for.

I’m a bit concerned for both Lily’s and Blue Moon because both Starbucks and Caribou are scheduled to oopen stores this spring. Rumour has it that Dunn Brothers is also planning to come this year. Caribou has purchased the old train depot, which housed Hardee’s/Carl’s Jr. No one I know seems to know what Caribou is going to do with a two story location. When it was Hardee’s, there was additional seating on the second floor as well as a historical train/depot display. Apparently, there’s some new concept idea that Caribou has that they have been unable to implement until now. Whatever is going on, I’m hoping that my little local coffee shops are able to survive.

As you may know, I enjoy both Starbucks and Caribou–but they weren’t competing with local businesses. I know that I will occasionally patronize both locations (and maybe Dunn Brothers too as I’ve never been in one). But my heart remains with the Blue Moon. And I’d hate to see Lily’s go out of business as they have a fabulous turkey cranberry wrap.

Whining Update

I just learned that the other volunteers at the registration table have been promised $25 on top of their free meal.

Good thing I write the checks–I may throw my fiance’s name into the expenses.

Apparently, not all of my previous post went up. When I try to edit it,it’s all there, but it isn’t appearing on the blog. So for those of you who may have been slightly frustrated with the cliff-hanger, here’s the rest….

Here’s my thing. I got a call last night on my way home from the guy in charge of the event asking me if my fiance would be willing to do a very simple task at the registration table. He was willing–even though I felt awkward since he’s been doing a lot of favors for me lately. However, when I arrived at work today, I learned that no one else’s SO was asked to volunteer or help out.

While part of me acknowledges that the Executive Director’s wife and the other wife, who is a curator at the Walker Art Center, are probably better at schmoozing, there is another part of me that feels that because of my relatively low position in the organization and the fact that my fiance is not a wheeler-and-dealer, he has to “sing for his supper”.

I wouldn’t have asked him to come if I knew that he was going to have to work a table. And I don’t think I’ll invite him next year.

Somehow writing this all out isn’t making me feel any better about the situation.

On a Lighter Note

I’ve caught up with Police Beat! There hasn’t been much worth noting for awhile, but the last two weeks had some real gems….

9:04 p.m. Caller from the 800 block of West Third St. advised that the cops were called to the above location Sat. night to remove a subject that was sleeping in the bathroom. Caller stated another worker went into the same bathroom because the lights were turned off and there on the floor was the same guy. Caller requesting officers remove him again.

2:48 p.m. Caller from the 100 block of Main St. and two friends advised that a lady had taken their dog into the Favorite Bar and would not give it back to them. Several parties inside the bar said the dog came in on its own and did not want to leave. Also said the dog looks severely malnourished. Spoke with SSO who advised he was already aware of the situation. He advised he is taking care of it. Will assist SSO.

2:39 p.m. Caller form the 100 block of North Morehead St. requested to speak to animal control because caller felt that someone was coming into his yard and cutting the hair on his dogs. Dispatch advised caller to set up video surveillance on his house. Caller said he planned on it. Advised him to call as soon as he found something.

2:04 p.m. Caller from the 900 block of Chadron Ave. advised there were subjects at the above location that were spraying down another subject who was completely naked. Requested officers to check on same. Officers went to location and was advised unknown male had messed himself so they hosed him down outside as they did not want him in their shower. Naked man was now passed out in a blanket inside.

8:25 a.m. Caller from Wagon Wheel Trailer Ct. requested an officer at the above location to pick up an “illegal weapon” he want to dispose of. He advised he had received it a couple of years ago as a gift and no longer wants it because he doesn’t want to get into trouble by possessing it. Took into custody one sawed off shotgun.

12:46 p.m. Caller from the 100 block of North Chadron Ave. requested officers at the above location refer helping get her 85 year-old husband out of the attic. She advised there was no medical emergency. He just needed help as the attic is hard to get in and out of. Assisted same.

12:30 p.m. Caller stated two dogs are from county to his property and are a problem. He asked what the fine is for shooting a gun in town. Dispatch told him there was a citation for discharging a fire arm in town. Advised it was not a very good idea to do that. He said he had a friend that would take care of the problem.

5:27 p.m. Caller from the 600 block of Main St. advised that there are two to three guys sitting on the front porch of the house to the north of hers smoking pot. Caller stated they are all wearing shorts and shirts. Caller is requesting an officer so something about it. Subjects were smoking cigars.

Whining

I just need to get this off my chest right now so this is a locked post. My organization’s annual awards dinner is tonight. I was told when I came back from vacation that this year the SOs of all staff were invited at no charge to attend. I asked my boss about this and he said that it was true and apologized for not letting me know of this change sooner. No harm, no foul here.

g00fy_blonde agreed to attend. In the meantime, I have one colleague who is not bringing anyone, a second colleague who had already asked his brother to volunteer at the registration table who will get a free meal, and two other colleagues who are bringing their spouses. Originally, everyone, except the guy with the brother, was bringing someone.

Here’s my thing. I got a call last night on my way home from the guy in charge of the event asking me if would be willing to do a very simple task at the registration table. He was willing–even though I felt awkward since he’s been doing a lot of favors for me lately. I’m beginning to feel a bit more organized–and as I write that I notice hundreds of emails are now blasting my inbox.

Really though, things are beginning to look manageable, but then they always do as the week progresses. I refuse to take on more than I can handle right now–and that means telling some people “no”. I really don’t like telling people that I’m pretty much unavailable for an entire week, but that’s the reality. Well, it’s the reality if I want to stay sane and not bite off g00fy_blonde‘s head for every little thing.

I received a brand new blank journal yesterday. As I began to customize it and wrote on the very first page, I realized that I’d forgotten how much fun it is to write in a new notebook or journal. I felt very relaxed after just writing a short entry on why I purchased that particular journal. It also came with colored/scented pens and colored pencils, so I played with those too. I was getting pretty relaxed until I realized that I hadn’t done the financials for the district meeting. That pretty much ruined my zen-like mood.

However, I still feel that I’m making progress. I’m sure that I’ll feel much better on Thursday, except for the whole first session of pre-marital counseling thing–yikes!

Weekend Stuff

Was there a weekend this past week? I don’t feel like there was. The weekend was somehow drowned in running wedding errands, shipping out a much overdue package (and putting said package together), printing out invitations (and everything that goes with them), writing addresses on all invites, a bowling banquet, a disasterous tanning session, and oh yeah, Easter.

To say that I came into work with less energy than I had last week would be an understatement. Unfortunately, this is not one of those weeks that’s going to drag by slowly as I look for something to keep me busy. No, we have two board meetings this week and an awards dinner. That’s Monday-Wednesday. Lest you think I can rest on my laurels on Thursday in Friday, let me give you a sneak preview of next week–it starts with an A and ends with a T with a UDI in the middle. Am I ready for it? Nope. Will I be ready? Absolutely.

And then we come to next weekend which is filled with more wedding planning (cakes and registries and dress fittings) and my sister’s reception. Oh–and I’m doing a Purple Tree party because Sunday was looking rather empty on my calendar.

I’m afraid that this beautiful spring is going to pass by in a blur. Must remember to make time to go for a few walks/bike rides.
