I just finished The Dive From Clausen’s Pier by Ann Parker.  It’s gotten some lousy reviews on Amazon, but I kind of liked it.  Or, I liked it better than I thought I would.  It’s not a “feel good” type of book, and I’ve been reading a lot of depressing stuff lately.   But oddly enough, I didn’t find this book to be overly depressing.

What would you do if you were engaged to be married to someone you were beginning to realize that you no longer loved and suddenly a terrible accident left that person in a coma/paralyzed.   I couldn’t help but feel for Carrie, the narrator,  and wonder what I would do in her shoes.  I didn’t always like her and I didn’t agree with many of her decisions, but I thought the author did an excellent job of getting me into Carrie’s mind.

Parker has a way with words–and in many cases her images made me smile.  I’m glad I read the book because it has given me a lot to think about.  And in spite of Amazon, most of the library book club thought it was well written and a good read.

I’m Back!

Actually, I’ve been back since Friday and have been catching up on all I missed over the wedding/honeymoon.  I don’t have any pictures that I’m willing to post yet–there’s one where my brother and I bear a striking resemblence to Satan’s spawn which I may post later.

The wedding was really great.  My mother says that I should list all the things that went wrong somewhere because she thought I handled some mishaps fairly well.  Perhaps that’s because sweet_pickles and downthedip were amazing and helped us create 75 cds as wedding favors the night before, so I was able to actually get some sleep.  I really appreciate all they did–and I know I can’t really express it.

1.  Reader of the third scripture forgot the reading at home (about an hour away).  sweet_pickles reminded him that churches tend to have bibles and that he could probably just write it out.
2.  Church was locked when we arrived.  Fortunately, the Patchwork Princess still has the key for our women’s group to use the church so she ran home and got it.
3.  Florist arrives to set up but since there is no one at the church to tell them where things have to stay and where things have to go, he does the best that he can.
4.  Florist informs me that they forgot the unity candle holder and will have to take an hour to go get it.
5.  Photographer arrives and moves things around further for better pictures.
6.  I’m informed that my pregnant sister-in-law is bleeding and has cramps and so my brother has taken her to the emergency room.  They won’t be able to make it in time for pictures (for the record, I knew that he was where he needed to be–but I can’t tell anyone why he isn’t there)
7.  We had to vacate the sanctuary for awhile so that the evening service wouldn’t be distracted.  This created a small argument with the photographer who forgot that I had told him that during our initial conversation.
8.  I learn that my sister-in-law seems to be doing fine, but she won’t be able to come to the wedding, so I need to find another reader.  Finally, one of my bridesmaids agree to do her reading.
9.  It begins to rain during the outdoor pictures–but on the upside, we had all the pictures we needed by that point and everyone was sick of standing around anyway.
10.  The florist has the stand, but the unity candle is missing.  I later remember that the church had agreed to provide one, but no one had set it out, nor was there anyone we could talk to.  I ask that somebody just run out and get one.  Two people (neither who live in town and are rather unsure where Walmart is) agree to go.
11.  Everyone leaves to grab a bite to eat.   We can’t have food in the church, but my sister brings back tacos for the groom and myself since we can’t really leave.  I order a chicken taco because my soon-to-be husband hates Taco John’s and we haven’t been there in over 2 years.  My sister tells him twice that he needs to check the tacos because they’re not marked and one is chicken.  He grabs one, takes a bite and says “I got the chicken one”. This caused the meltdown because I hate their beef tacos.
12.  Pastor finally arrives while I’m finishing up the Potato Oles I’m not supposed to be eating on the church property and informs me that items that should not have been moved were placed on the floor of the sanctuary and the flowers are on the wrong alter.  He’s tskking at me and I don’t have the presence of mind to remind him that had someone greeted us at the church, these things wouldn’t have happened.
13.  Ushers forget the schedule and don’t light the candles when they should.  They also roll out the white paper too early, so the entire wedding party walks across it trying very carefully not to tear it.
14.  My father trips over my train on the way back to the pew but he didn’t fall and my dress didn’t tear.
15.  The first reader can’t find the passage that his wife put at the front of the bible but eventually he hears her whispers and figures it out.
16.  The second reader, my bridesmaid, hasn’t had time to really read her passage and I can barely hear her myself.
17.  The third reader (the one who forgot the reading) reads somepassage that isn’t the one we selected.  My brother believes that it referenced genocide.  Apparently, they missed the 1 in front of John.  And because it’s not what he spent time working on, he stumbles over it trying to get through it.
18.  My mother goes to the wrong candle for the unity candle lighting part.  Frankly, I didn’t notice this, but she keeps bringing it up.
19.  No one told us where the roses where for the rose ceremony.  Therefore, we stumbled around for a few seconds looking for them.
20.  My grandmother’s cake servers didn’t make it to the reception set up and we had to wait for someone who had the car they were in to return so that we could cut the cake.
21.  The topper of the evening–when feeding each other the cake, my dear husband wasn’t paying attention to the part that was about to fall.  When I took a bite, the rest of the piece fell down the front of my dress!
22.  Groom’s brother asked if he could propose to his girlfriend at our reception. ummmm…… NOOOO! But I was much nicer than that.
22.  Tossing bouquet was nowhere to be found at the reception hall.  No one had seen it anywhere, so we used one of the table arrangements.  When we were packing up the gifts, we found it buried amongst them in a cute little jar that looked like it belonged on the reception table. Oh well–I took it home and put it in my kitchen. And yeah, I tossed the bouquet on purpose to the above girlfriend.

Really, all of that is so minor.  We got married and have many, many lovely memories.  My sister-in-law is doing well, and her little girl had a blast tearing up the dance floor at the reception.  We got married, the papers were signed, and our families and friends were all very supportive and helpful.  I’m sure that there was a lot that happened that I am oblivious to and that certain people, like sweet_pickles and Patchwork Princess, just quietly stepped in and resolved.

I’ll post pictures once I have some!

Only Two More Days!

I had a very productive day. Target does sell picture frames that can be signed–and it was pretty cheap too. I should probably remember to bring a couple of pens in case the one that’s included dries out.

Also managed to get a lot of errands run and made significant progress on my projects. The attendant gifts will be ready by tomorrow night. And I have every confidence that things will get done by the time they need to be done.

In other news, my father fell down some stairs on Sunday. He’s okay, but very, very sore and has his arm in a sling. He refuses to wear it on Saturday–even though we’ve all told him that we think he should.

Grandma continues to do well. The weather gets better every day, so I think it’s going to be a great day!

So it’s 4 am. I’ve been up since around 2:30-3. I woke up and realized that I haven’t planned/laid out/purchased supplies for our wedding programs. And as usual, one anxiety leads to another and I suddenly had a strong urge to check my bank balance.

Bank balance is low, but in okay condition. However, a little research continues to show that I still haven’t been charged for a picture frame I ordered–and need on Saturday. A quick look at their website reveals that the item (which I was assured I would receive today, the 17th) is still backordered. Customer service opens at 4 am.

One guess who will be getting a call at 6 am my time.

And this is why I love blogging. Just the act of writing that out and reading it back to myself has calmed me down considerably. I think maybe I can go back to bed now.

Update:Just got off the phone with customer service. Their computer still shows that the frame is scheduled to arrive in their warehouse on May 10. The rep said that perhaps the truck hasn’t been unloaded or logged in yet. Maybe she doesn’t realize yet that this is the 17th. Either way, I cancelled the order. I’ll find something similar at Target or somewhere.

Also, was unable to really get back to sleep, but did have a quick dream where I was in a strange town and a car service was going to take me to my car, but I couldn’t remember where I had parked it, and they had no record of where they had picked me up. Anxiety, anyone?

I’m getting married in 4 days! I’m a mixture of anxiety and excitement. There’s still a number of things left to do, but I’m really looking forward to the whole thing. I think it’s really hitting me today because I finally get to pick up my dress. I don’t know why that is making it all seem so real, but it is.

I’m frantically trying to get some loose ends tied before the end of the day tomorrow because I’m then taking off until Memorial Day. That’s a lot of time to be out of the office–especially since I took about as much time just about two months ago. That’s about it for my vacation time this year. I may be able to get some time off in December, but I better get used to sitting in this office–I’ve gotten rather spoiled lately!

Several of my friends came together on Friday night for a “bachelorette” party. Being that I was the only non-married female in attendance, we have to use “bachelorette” fairly loosely.

We started at Oar D’Oeuvre, my favorite local restraunt. The Patchwork Princess’ babysitter fell through, so my FMIL came over and babysat while we were out. Then it was back to the house for some drinks and discussion. It was a really nice time.

I split Saturday between a Purple Tree party and working on my attendant gifts. Let’s just say that perhaps now was not the best time to try to learn how to sew using a pattern. Hopefully, they won’t look too closely at the finished product. They are not finished yet, but significant progress has been made.

Sunday was spent on the attendant gifts. My mother “cancelled” Mother’s Day because of the wedding, and my sister’s recent wedding, and the fact that her brother always wants to open the cabin on Mother’s Day weekend. So that’s what she decided to do. Also, she had a graduation to attend in the afternoon on Sunday–so it seemed like a lot of bother.

We did go to the FIL’s house for dinner and to celebrate with her. Dinner was pleasant–perhaps because one FBIL came without his girlfriend and her kids. Everyone was in a pretty good mood.

Today is going well for a Monday. I’m tired, I’ve got the munchies, and stuff is piling up. In other words, it’s a typical Monday. Fortunately, I’m only working through Wednesday.

It’s a bleak day outside. Frankly, the rain doesn’t bother me because Mother Nature needs to get it all out of her system before the 20th. And everything is really starting to get green and bloom. Can’t really complain about that.

990s are just about finished–I just need to run a couple things by my boss and they’re out the door.

I think our first wedding gift from one of our registered shops arrived today. And it’s addressed to me! Just me! That means I get to open it–not him, me! Should I open it? Should I wait? Decisions, decisions…There’s something fun about knowing that a package is at home waiting for you. Even when I order stuff myself–I love the anticipation of opening the package. Which is also the reason that I can wait.

Okay, enough about the wedding–I have another blog for all that.

Having written that, I realize that I don’t have much else to say because the wedding is pretty much consuming all my free time and free thought it seems.

Guess I should get back to work.

I’m doing okay today. I woke up early this morning and remembered my “before bed” mantra last night, “10 minutes of exercise, make dinner”. That got me out of bed. Dinner had to be made because it’s a crockpot recipe, and there’s little that can be more frustrating than to come home to make dinner and realize that I should have started it hours ago.

I did my 10 minutes too.

I also finished the April financials for Women of Today and emailed them out. And I managed to begin pressing the “applique” for the beginnings of my attendant gifts. I was hoping to complete one last night, but apparently my mind resides in an alternate universe where an hour equals approximately 240 minutes. I mean, it wasn’t even remotely realistic. Progress was made however.

My fiance is at the clinic right now taking his first class on transferring to “the pump” to control his insulin levels. He is required to take three classes, with the last one being smack dab in the middle of our honeymoon. Rescheduling was not an option because the pharmaceutical company has discontinued his longterm insulin and he already has already purchased the last amounts available in our area. The next available classes will be held in Aug/Sept–and his supply is already running out. He’s got a positive attitude towards the whole thing because it will probably make his life a bit easier, but he told me today that he is a bit nervous. I mean, what does he need 9 hours of classes for?

I’m still doing 990s and they still suck.

Ups and Downs

Let’s start with a very big up–rumor has it that my grandmother is out of the hospital! Her doctor walked in yesterday morning, took a look at her, took a look at the antibiotics, noticed they weren’t working, and changed the prescription. By yesterday afternoon, my grandmother was well enough to go home. But she is under strict orders not to work in the dining room for 4 or 5 days.

On the down side, I learned that my wedding favors will not arrive in time for the wedding. This is not a major setback (in spite of my initial freakout) as I still have time and a strategy. Thank goodness I checked my bank account today and noticed that I still hadn’t been charged for them!

On another downside, I hate 990s. They suck.

But let’s finish on the up–I’m finally feeling like things are getting back under control. I might not be completely with it yet, but I’m getting there.
